Insurgent
Insurgent
by Nathan
The book I read was Insurgent by Veronica Roth. She’s also published Divergent and is working on a third book. The third book is projected to come out in 2013. The movie “Divergent” will come out on March 21, 2014 (IMDb).
The main characters are Beatrice "Tris" Prior and Caleb Prior who are both 16 years old and are brother and sister. Other characters in this story are Tobias Eaton/ Four and Eric who are 18 years old and Christina, Peter, Marcus Eaton, Jeanie, Uriah, and Tori who are all 16 years old. There are five factions in this story. A faction is a city devoted to a certain character trait. These factions are: Candor, the honest, Erudite, the intelligent, Amity, the peaceful, Dauntless, the brave, and Abnegation, the selfless. The faction, Abnegation, was destroyed by the Erudite in “Divergent” and now the Dauntless are split into half good and half bad. The good are at the Candor headquarters and the bad are located at the Erudite headquarters. The bad Dauntless attacked Candor with the mind control serums. After that, the good Dauntless returned to their own headquarters.
In this action/romance novel there is violence, technology, deceit plus the action and romance. This book has action because the good Dauntless fight the bad Dauntless throughout the book. In this story there is romance because there is kissing between Tris and Tobias. Also Uriah and Marlene love each other but Marlene dies while being controlled by the mind controlling serum. Examples of technology in this story would be the serum, the serum injecting gun, the solar panels, and the surveillance.
The dialect in this book is not old fashioned nor futuristic, but the dialect is the same dialect as you and I speak. I could say the vocabulary was just names but that would be false because these are common names. Though Jeanie is an uncommon name, the rest of the names in this story are not. The unusual vocabulary in the story was the names of the factions such as Candor, Erudite, Amity, Dauntless, and Abnegation because those are odd names.
There are flashbacks and plot twists in this book. An example of a flashback was when Tris would not shoot a gun because she was still mourning over Will, her boyfriend. An example of plot twists was when the good Dauntless moved to the Dauntless Headquarters, the Erudite activated the mind control serum, and attempted to kill three of the good Dauntless.
I would really recommend this book to you if you like action, romance, and deceit. The plot twists were spaced evenly throughout the book which made the book more interesting because it kept me wanting to read more. Insurgent had plenty of action to keep the book suspenseful. This book added the Factionless, who are people who were forced out of a Faction, as a component in the battle between the the good and the bad Dauntless.
